Real, Citable Money
"Ask about rebates" isn't a plan. Here's the actual, sourced, step-by-step version of what Austin Energy currently offers that touches a window, door or siding project — and how you'd actually go claim it.
We service Austin and the surrounding Central-Texas suburbs, and Austin Energy is the one utility whose residential efficiency programs we can point to directly and confidently, with current numbers. Here's the walkthrough — step by step, sourced, no vague hand-waving.
These programs are run by Austin Energy specifically — not every Central-Texas suburb is on their grid. If your electric utility is Oncor, Pedernales Electric Cooperative, or a different municipal provider, these specific programs don't apply to you, though your utility may have its own (ask us at your estimate and we'll tell you honestly what we know).
Austin Energy's whole-home upgrade pathways report rebates averaging about $3,000 (Home Energy Savings) or about $1,500 (Home Energy Savings Essential), plus access to 0% financing on qualifying whole-home energy improvements. These are broader home-performance programs — insulation, HVAC, air sealing — that a window, door or siding project can factor into if it's part of a larger efficiency push, not a rebate specifically for glass alone.
If your project includes solar screens on west- or south-facing glass (a genuinely effective, low-cost heat-load reducer in Central Texas), Austin Energy pays $1.00 per square foot for eligible fabric with a heat-gain coefficient of 0.40 or lower, on single-family homes, condos, townhomes, duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes with residential-rate electric service.
If you qualify by income — enrollment in the Customer Assistance Program, or Medically Vulnerable Registry enrollment plus an 80% Median Family Income requirement — free home energy improvements may be available, along with a rebate and 0% financing for up to 10 years on a new AC system.
For 2023–2025, IRS Section 25C let homeowners claim 30% of the cost of qualifying ENERGY STAR windows and doors, up to annual caps. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (signed July 4, 2025) repealed it early — per the IRS's own program page, it only applies to property placed in service before December 31, 2025. If your project is happening in 2026, this specific credit doesn't apply, full stop. See our full rebates & incentives page for the complete, sourced breakdown of what's live versus expired.
For rebate programs that route through a participating contractor (like solar screens), the paperwork is typically submitted within a set window after installation — ask us at your estimate whether your specific job qualifies and how we handle the paperwork on our end. For whole-home programs, you generally work directly with Austin Energy's Home Energy Savings pathway, which may involve an energy assessment first. Either way: confirm eligibility before your project is finished, not after — rebate programs are far easier to secure prospectively than retroactively.
Figures current as of this writing per Austin Energy's own published program pages and the IRS's Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit page; One Big Beautiful Bill Act, P.L. 119-21 (July 4, 2025). Programs, dollar amounts and eligibility change — always verify directly before relying on any number. This is not tax advice; confirm your specific situation with a qualified tax professional.
